Fly Smart: Your Guide to
Better Airfare

Tips, tricks, and insider knowledge to help you get the best deals on flights, so you can spend more on the trip itself.

Here's something most travel agents won't tell you: for airfare, you're often better off booking it yourself. Not because agents can't do it, but because booking directly with the airline puts more control, flexibility, and protection in your hands.

I put together this guide to share everything I know about getting great deals on flights. Consider it a gift from me to you. Use these tips and you'll fly smarter every time.

Book directly with the airline

When you book directly with the airline, your ticket is in your name and under their policy. If you need to cancel or change your flight, the airline gives you a credit for the full value of your ticket. That credit stays with you, not a third-party agent. If your plans change (and travel plans do change) this flexibility is worth its weight in gold.

Use fare alerts to catch the best prices

Set up price alerts on Google Flights, Hopper, or Skyscanner for your travel dates. Prices fluctuate daily, and airlines frequently offer flash sales. By watching the trends, you can jump on a great price the moment it drops, often saving $100-300 per person compared to booking at the first price you see.

Timing matters. A lot.

For domestic flights, the sweet spot is usually 1-3 months before travel. For international, 2-6 months ahead. Avoid booking on weekends. Tuesday and Wednesday often have the best deals. Early morning or late-night departures are typically the cheapest fares. And if your dates are flexible, even shifting by a day or two can save you significantly.

Know when bundled airfare makes sense, and when it doesn't

Some resort packages include airfare, and sometimes that's a genuine savings. But not always. Before accepting a bundled package, check what the flight alone would cost if you booked it separately. If the difference is small, booking your own flight gives you more control over schedules, seat selection, and cancellation flexibility. I'll always be transparent about this when putting together your proposal.
